A group within the German Resistance sought to overthrow Hitler by detonating a bomb at his field headquarters. The attempt failed. The year was 1521. The German monk and professor Martin Luther stood before Charles V, ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, at the Imperial Diet of Worms. Before him sat a table piled high with his writings. The question was simple: would he stand by what he had written, or would he recant?
