At VGBC, we believe very strongly that God has spoken and communicated to us in the Bible.  Because of this conviction, our preaching is based on God’s Word.  The responsibility of the preacher is to discover what the biblical text means and explain it in a way that the congregation will understand.  We are committed to expository preaching, which simply means we want to expose the clear meaning of the text.  We want you to be able to read along in your Bible and be able to verify that what is being taught from the pulpit is consistent with what the text says.  We also believe that the goal of preaching is application and lives changed for God’s glory.  We want you to be challenged and encouraged, and we hope you are changed to be more like Christ as a result of hearing His Word.

Sermon Series by Dr. Chris Moore

Our church’s normal approach to preaching is to go through books of the Bible.  For this series, we are taking a different approach.  We are looking at our doctrinal statement, the 2000 Baptist Faith & Message.  Each week we are focusing on a different section from our statement.  For example, we talk about Scripture, God, man, salvation, and the church.  We will ask the question, “What does the Bible teach about this subject?”  The reason we affirm this doctrinal statement is because we believe it accurately reflects what the Bible teaches.  Christians seem to be increasingly less interested in doctrinal statements and theology.  Healthy believers and churches have always been able to articulate and defend what they believe.  Our goal in this series is simply to guard and be faithful to “the faith once for all delivered to the saints.”

Genesis 1:26-28

In this sermon we discover what we believe about man.  We learn that we were created in God’s image, and we talk about why this is significant.  We also talk about the importance of gender and how we should think biblically about gender issues.  We learn several ways we are sinners.  We also talk about how Christ is the 2nd Adam who can solve our sin problem.

The Trinity
Ephesians 1:3-14

In this sermon, we talk about what we believe about the Trinity.  We believe God is one (in substance), He is three (in Persons), and each Person is fully God.  We talk about why we believe these biblical truths, and we also discover several practical applications of the Trinity for our lives.

Genesis 1

In this sermon, we discover what we believe about God.  We believe God is one and He is the Creator.  We look at the account of creation in Genesis 1 and learn why this is significant for us.  We also believe God is the Redeemer.  Even though God is all-powerful and independent of His creation, yet He chooses to engage us and make Himself knowable to us even when we have rebelled against Him.  We learn how we should respond to our Creator-Redeemer.

The Scriptures
2 Timothy 3:14-4:5

In this sermon, we learn what we believe about the Bible. We begin the sermon series with God’s Word, because this book is foundational to everything we believe. We learn that all the words of the Bible are God’s words.  Consequently, the Scriptures are authoritative, true, necessary, sufficient, and clear.
